Business of Software is Dead
Here’s a thought that keeps me up at night:
What if the entire software industry — the $600B+ market of building apps, SaaS products, and enterprise solutions — is about to become irrelevant?
Not disrupted. Not transformed. Irrelevant.
Let me explain.
The Karpathy Moment
In February 2025, Andrej Karpathy — who led AI at Tesla and co-founded OpenAI — coined a term that shook the industry: “vibe coding.”
His exact words from the original tweet:
“There’s a new kind of coding where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists.”
By December, reflecting on the year, Karpathy doubled down. Code is now “free, ephemeral, malleable, discardable after single use.”
We went from “software is eating the world” to “software is a disposable napkin.”
The Power Shift Nobody Saw Coming
Here’s what flew under the radar. Karpathy observed:
“Regular people benefit a lot more from LLMs compared to professionals, corporations and governments.”
This is unprecedented.
Every major technology in history — electricity, computers, internet — benefited corporations first, then trickled down to regular people.
AI coding flips this completely.
A solo founder with Claude can now build what used to require a 10-person dev team. Not in months. In hours. Jack Dorsey vibe-coded a new messaging app this year. Non-technical workers are building and selling apps they create in minutes.
Why would you pay $50K/month for a SaaS tool when you can build your own version in an afternoon?
But Here’s What the Data Actually Shows
The 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey paints a more nuanced picture. 49,000+ developers responded, and the findings are striking:
AI adoption is up, but trust is crashing:
- 84% of developers now use AI tools (up from 76% in 2024)
- But trust in AI accuracy dropped from 40% to just 29%
- Positive sentiment toward AI fell from 72% to 60%
The “almost right” problem is real:
- 66% of developers cite their #1 frustration as “AI solutions that are almost right, but not quite”
- 45% say debugging AI-generated code is more time-consuming than writing it themselves
- 75% still ask another human for help when they don’t trust AI’s answers
Vibe coding? Not in production:
- 72% say vibe coding is NOT part of their professional work
- An additional 5% emphatically refuse to participate in it
- 52% of developers either don’t use AI agents or stick to simple autocomplete
The Research Confirms It
A December 2025 study from arXiv — “Professional Software Developers Don’t Vibe, They Control” — observed experienced developers using AI agents in the wild.
The key finding:
“Professional developers do not vibe code. Instead, they carefully control the agents through planning and supervision.”
The researchers found that AI agents work for “well-described, straightforward tasks” — but fail at complex ones. Developers value agents as productivity tools, but refuse to give up control over architecture and quality.
Even more striking: a separate METR study found that AI coding assistants actually decreased productivity of experienced developers by 19%. The developers expected a 20% boost — they got the opposite.
So Who’s Right?
Both. And neither.
Here’s my take:
The business of commodity software is dead.
Generic CRMs. Basic project management tools. Simple CRUD apps. Dashboards. Internal tools.
All of this becomes vibe-codeable. Why pay for Notion when you can build your own in a weekend? Why subscribe to 47 SaaS tools when an AI agent can generate exactly what you need?
But the business of complex software is more alive than ever.
Someone still needs to:
- Architect systems that handle millions of users
- Ensure security when the stakes are real
- Maintain complex integrations across decades
- Take responsibility when things break
The difference? The bar just got 10x higher.
The Market Already Shows It
Look at what developers actually want, per Stack Overflow:
What makes developers adopt a technology:
- Reputation for quality
- Robust and complete API
- …”AI integration” ranked second to last
What makes developers reject a technology:
- Security or privacy concerns
- Prohibitive pricing
- Availability of better alternatives
- “Lack of AI” ranked dead last
The message is clear: developers want tools that work, not tools that ride hype.
Language trends tell the story too:
- Python surged 7 percentage points (AI/ML standard)
- Rust and Go grew (infrastructure, performance)
- Claude Sonnet became the most admired LLM (67.5% admiration rate)
The pattern: AI is eating the easily-describable work first.
The Job Market Paradox
Here’s where it gets interesting:
- 64% of developers say AI is NOT a threat to their job
- But that’s down from 68% last year — confidence is slipping
- More developers are “complacent” at work (47%) than happy (24%)
What makes developers happy?
- Autonomy and trust
- Competitive pay
- Solving real-world problems
Not AI. Not fancy tools. Autonomy and meaning.
Karpathy predicts vibe coding will “terraform software and alter job descriptions.” The survey data suggests the alteration is already happening — just not in the direction most expected.
The New Reality
We’re entering a world where:
- Personal software becomes the default. Everyone builds their own tools. The concept of “buying software” feels as outdated as buying pre-made spreadsheets.
- The software middle class dies. Mid-tier SaaS companies with 10–50 employees, building “good enough” solutions? Gone. Either you’re a solo creator vibe-coding, or you’re building something genuinely complex.
- Developers become architects. As Stack Overflow notes: “As AI commoditizes syntax, system design and architecture are becoming more valuable, not less.”
- The “throwaway app” becomes normal. Need a tool for a specific task? Build it. Use it once. Delete it. Code is “discardable after single use.”
- Trust becomes the bottleneck. With only 29% trusting AI accuracy, human verification isn’t going away — it’s becoming the core competency.
The Question
So is the business of software dead?
No. It’s splitting into two:
Dead: The business of building software that anyone could vibe-code.
Thriving: The business of building software that actually matters — where trust, reliability, and expertise are non-negotiable.
The middle? That’s the kill zone.
